War: first, one hopes to win;
then one expects the enemy to lose; then, one is satisfied that he too is suffering;
in the end, one is surprised that everyone has lost.

War’s never a winning thing, Charlie. You just lose all the time, and the one who loses last asks for terms. All I remember is a lot of losing and sadness and nothing good but the end of it. The end of it, Charles, that was a winning all to itself, having nothing to do with guns. But I don’t suppose that’s the kind of victory you boys mean for me to talk on.

But there is suffering in life, and there are defeats. No one can avoid them. But it's better to lose some of the battles in the struggles for your dreams than to be defeated without ever knowing what you're fighting for.

In war everyone loses. This brutal truth can be seen in the eyes of every solider in every world.

Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning.

Winning isn’t everything, but losing isn’t anything.

When we make it win-or-lose, everyone loses.

Sometimes you lose a battle. But mischief always wins the war

We're going to fight this battle with everything we have, and we will probably lose. But then we will fight it again, and we will lose a little less, for this battle will win us many supporters. And then we'll lose *again*. And *again*. And we will fight on. Because as hard as it is to win by fighting, it's impossible to win by doing nothing.

Sometimes it is better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thing.

One is left with the horrible feeling now that war settles nothing; that to win a war is as disastrous as to lose one.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn. But have fun. Most people never win because they’re more afraid of losing.

War is not won by victory.
