We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.

Ono što nazivamo svojim životom, to nije sve što smo proživjeli; to je samo odabir. Previše je toga što proživljavamo, više nego što naš um može zahvatiti. Zato si izabiremo ovo ili ono, već što nam odgovara, pa iz toga ispletemo neku pojednostavnjenu priču; i onda taj proizvod nazivamo svojim životom. Ali koliko otpadaka pritom zanemarimo, koliko čudnih i strašnih stvari izostavimo, zaboga, kad bi to sve čovjek osvijestio! Ali mi možemo živjeti samo jedan jednostavan život. Proživjeti više od toga bilo bi izvan naše moći. Ne bismo imali snage živjeti kad usput ne bismo pogubili većinu života.

I doubt whether a doctor can answer this question in general terms. For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given moment. To put the question in general terms would be comparable to the question posed to a chess champion: “Tell me, Master, what is the best move in the world?” There simply is no such thing as the best or even a good move apart from a particular situation in a game and the particular personality of one’s opponent. The same holds for human existence. One should not search for an abstract meaning of life. Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life to carry out a concrete assignment which demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated. Thus, everyone’s task is as unique as is his specific opportunity to implement it.

Понякога в живота има моменти на неизразимо удоволствие, което не може напълно да бъде обяснено със тези символи, наречени думи. Тяхното значение може да бъде изразено само от недоловимият език на сърцето.

Life is a hospital in which every patient is possessed by the desire of changing his bed. One would prefer to suffer near the fire, and another is certain he would get well if he were by the window.

After all, what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die.
