Courage is the capacity to meet the anxiety which arises as one achieves freedom. It is the willingness to differentiate, to move from the protecting realms of parental dependence to new levels of freedom and integration.

Courage is the resolution to face the unforeseen.

Courage is a kind of salvation. Courage is knowing what not to fear.

Courage is the ability to be able to cope with the disappointment of not getting what we desire, and yet, move on in life.

Courage is feeling fear, not getting rid of fear, and taking action in the face of fear.

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.

Fearlessness may be a gift but perhaps the more precious thing is the courage acquired through endeavor, courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one's actions, courage that could be described as 'grace under pressure'- grace which is renewed repeatedly in the face of harsh, unremitting pressure.

Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.

Courage is not something that you already have that makes you brave when the tough times start. Courage is what you earn when you've been through the tough times and you discover they aren't so tough after all.

Courage is the measure of our heartfelt participation with life, with another, with a community, a work; a future. To be courageous is not necessarily to go anywhere or do anything except to make conscious those things we already feel deeply and then to live through the unending vulnerabilities of those consequences.

Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to act despite it.

Courage is knowing what not to fear.
