I looked and looked but I didn't see God.

I found it hard work now to pray to God, because despair was swallowing me up

Word I had no one left but God.

I had failed to make a gift of myself to God.

I look'd to Heav'n, and try'd to pray; But or ever a prayer had gusht, A wicked whisper came and made My heart as dry as dust.

I never spoke with God,

I need a father. I need a mother. I need some older, wiser being to cry to. I talk to God, but the sky is empty.
