Tension of opposites.

To know one thing, you must know the opposite.

Without contraries is no progression. Attraction and repulsion, reason and energy, love and hate, are necessary to human existence.

All things come into being by conflict of opposites.

Whether in an advantageous position or a disadvantageous one, the opposite state should be always present to your mind.

Nothing so promotes the growth of consciousness as [the] inner confrontation of opposites.

Balance every thought with its opposition. Because the marriage of them is the destruction of illusion.

If only a world-wide consciousness could arise that all division and fission are due to the splitting of opposites in the psyche, then we should know where to begin.

Second, you learn to dispute the automatic thoughts by marshaling contrary evidence.

All being, it seemed, was built on opposites, on division. Man or woman, vagabond or citizen, lover or thinker — no breath could both be in and out, none could be man and wife, free and yet orderly, knowing the urge of life and the joy of intellect. Always the one paid for the other, though each was equally precious and essential.

Thought must be divided against itself before it can come to any knowledge of itself.

<i>Two contrary reasons</i>. We must begin with that, otherwise we cannot understand anything and everything is heretical. And even at the end of each truth we must add that we are bearing the opposite truth in mind.

What is wanted is not the will to believe, but the will to find out, which is the exact opposite.

Question: What is the opposite of faith?

Not disbelief. Too final, certain, closed. Itself is a kind of belief.

Doubt.

The human condition, but what of the angelic? Halfway between Allahgod and homosap, did they ever doubt? They did: challenging God's will one day they hid muttering beneath the Throne, daring to ask forbidden things: antiquestions. Is it right that. Could it not be argued. Freedom, the old antiquest. He calmed them down, naturally, employing management skills a la god. Flattered them: you will be the instruments of my will on earth, the salvationdamnation of man, all the usual etcetera. And hey presto, the end of protest, on with the haloes, back to work. Angels are easily pacified; turn them into instruments and they'll play your harpy tune. Human beings are tougher nuts, can doubt anything, even the evidence of their own eyes. Of behing-their-own-eyes. Of what, as they sink heavy-lidded, transpires behind closed peepers ... angels, they don't have much in the way of a will. To will is to disagree; not to submit; to dissent.
