remember from my own

I like to remember things my own way. How I remembered them, not necessarily the way they happened.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

I have come to feel that the only learning which significantly influences behavior is self-discovered, self-appropriated learning.

Everything I know I learned after I was thirty.

All I have learned, I learned from books.

Ich las damals unendlich viel und zwar gründlich. In wenigen Jahren schuf ich mir damit die Grundlagen eines Wissens, von denen ich auch heute noch zehre.

En cuanto a mí, siempre que he deseado aprender ha sido para saber yo mismo y no para enseñar; siempre he creído que antes de enseñar a los demás era menester comenzar por saber lo bastante para sí, y, de todos los estudios que he intentado hacer en mi vida en medio de los hombres, apenas hay alguno que no hubiera hecho igualmente solo en una isla desierta en la que hubiera estado confinado para el resto de mis días.

resolví no ligarme a nadie sino conservar mi independencia sacando partido de mis conocimientos, cuyo valor comenzaba a conocer al fin y que hasta entonces había juzgado con harta modestia.

But...as bad as it was, I learned something about myself. That I could go through something like that and survive. I mean, I know it could have been worse — a lot worse — but for me, it was all I could have handled at the time. And I learned from it.

The wisest man I ever knew taught me something I never forgot. And although I never forgot it, I never quite memorized it either. So what I’m left with is the memory of having learned something very wise that I can’t quite remember.
