People are rarely what they seem, babe.

What seems is not what is. People are not what they appear to be.

Very few of us are what we seem.

What we like to think of ourselves and what we really are rarely have much in common....

We see people not as they are, but as they appear to us. And these appearances are usually misleading.

To make clever people believe we are what we are not is in most instances harder than really to become what we want to seem to be.
