It is not good to want a thing too much. It sometimes drives the luck away. You must want it just enough, and you must be very tactful with Gods or the gods.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

giving up what you want most for what you want now can deprive you of life’s real treasures.

It does seem as if the more one gets the more one wants

it always hurts more to have and lose than to not have in the first place.

It is madness to risk losing what you need in pursuing what you simply desire.

If expectations rise with results there is no logic in striving for more because you’ll feel the same after putting in extra effort. It gets dangerous when the taste of having more — more money, more power, more prestige — increases ambition faster than satisfaction. In that case one step forward pushes the goalpost two steps ahead. You feel as if you’re falling behind, and the only way to catch up is to take greater and greater amounts of risk.

All the energy you put into things you can't control comes at the expense of things you can control.

People will do more to avoid a loss than to acquire a comparable gain

Having more does not keep you from wanting more. And if you always want more - to be richer, more beautiful, more well known - you are missing the bigger picture, and I can tell you from experience, happiness will never come
