There is nothing which we receive with so much reluctance as advice.

The problem is taking any one person’s advice too seriously. Ideally, asking advice should be like echolocation. Bounce ideas off of all of your surroundings, and listen to all the echoes to get the whole picture.

"Asking for advice means, "Tell me what to do." Seeking education means, "Tell me what to study so I can learn what I need to do.

- I have come for advice.
- That is easily got.
- And help.
- That is not always so easy.

I wish I had an answer to that because I'm tired of answering that question.

You come to me for advice, but you can't cope with anything you don't recognize. Hmmm. So we'll have to tell you something you already know but make it sound like news, eh Well, business as usual , I suppose.

You know how advice is. You only want it if it agrees with what you wanted to do anyway.

I have always hesitated to give advice, for how can one advise another how to act unless one knows that other as well as one knows himself? Heaven knows. I know little enough of myself: I know nothing of others. We can only guess at the thoughts and emotions of our neighbours. Each one of us is a prisoner in a solitary tower and he communicates with the other prisoners, who form mankind, by conventional signs that have not quite the same meaning for them as for himself.

If you want to make the wrong decision, ask everyone.

Perhaps real wisdom lies in not seeking answers at all. Any answer we find will not be true for long. An answer is a place where we can fall asleep as life moves past us to its next question. After all these years I have begun to wonder if the secret of living well is not in having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company.

Regardless of their reciprocity styles, people love to be asked for advice.

When we are closed to ideas, what we hear is criticism. When we are open to criticism, what we get is advice.

If we demand a certain answer, we set ourselves up for disappointment, and if disappointment isn’t arrested, it will soon lead to discouragement.
