If the world changed, I could not exist, and if I changed, the world could not exist

You may come to believe that the world cannot survive without your interference, while the truth is that the world cannot survive your arrogant interference.

People have the notion of saving the world by shifting things around, changing the rules, and who’s on top, and so forth. No, no! Any world is a valid world if it’s alive. The thing to do is to bring life to it, and the only way to do that is to find in your own case where the life is and become alive yourself.

You can't exist in this world without leaving a piece of yourself behind.

There is so much trouble in coming into the world, and so much more, as well as meanness, in going out of it, that 'tis hardly worth while to be here at all.

You don't need to change the world; you need to change yourself.

We must give up believing that we can 'improve' the world, that at least we can make man better, even if we cannot make him happy. At the same time, if we take this situation of the Christian seriously, we must refuse to further the disintegrating tendency in the world. We must not say to ourselves, 'We can't do anything about it!' To talk like this is to play into the hands of the Prince of this world. Thus we seem caught between two necessities, which nothing can alter: on the one hand it is impossible for us to make this world less sinful; on the other hand it is impossible for us to accept it as it is.

When you are free of the world, you can do something about it. As long as you are a prisoner of it, you are helpless to change it. On the contrary, whatever you do will aggravate the situation.

This world is not enough, but it will have to do. You can either hold on or let go.

What will happen to the world when you leave it? Nothing, in any case, will remain of what is now visible.

For, work as you will, there is no chance of a new and better world until the old be utterly destroyed.

So, the world is fine. We don’t have to save the world — the world is big enough to look after itself. What we have to be concerned about, is whether or not the world we live in, will be capable of sustaining us in it. That’s what we need to think about.
