If you really want to help this world, what you really will have to teach is how to live in it.

We need to find a balance between solving problems and learning to live with unsolved problems.

That you need God more than anything, you know at all times in your heart. But don’t you know also that God needs you — in the fullness of his eternity, you? How would man exist if God did not need him, and how would you exist? You need God in order to be, and God needs you — for that which is the meaning of your life.

We have to face the fact that either all of us are going to die together or we are going to learn to live together, and if we are to live together we have to talk.

You have to live with the people in hypocrisy for them to stay happy with you.

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.

I beg you, to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

Well, while I hope God is with those of us who live such comfortable lives, I know God is with the poorest and most vulnerable.

In order to write about life first you must live it.
