If you have assumed a character above your strength, you have both acted in this matter in an unbecoming way, and you have neglected that which you might have fulfilled.

If you have assumed a character beyond your strength, you have both played a poor figure in that, and neglected one that is within your powers.

If you betray yourself, if you say untrue things, if you act out a lie, you weaken your character.

I move that in view of your honor’s attitude this afternoon — the way you looked at me and condemned me, you have become so prejudiced against me, it will be impossible for you to sit in fairness in this case, both as arbiter and in judgment — that you disqualify yourself.

Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.
